What is Ketamine

Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement. Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges. In my work with Journey Clinical we only use the sublingual lozenge form.

How does Ketamine feel?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy combines two highly effective mental health treatments — the drug ketamine and talk therapy. Psychiatrists at the Rein Center take an integrative approach to healing mental health patients, using a combination of treatments ranging from various psychotherapies to meditation and yoga. This approach addresses the underlying issues that increase your vulnerability to poor mental health rather than just treating the symptoms. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy takes two proven, effective treatments, using each to enhance the effects of the other. Evidence suggests that this technique results in longer-lasting symptom improvement.

Questions about Ketamine Assisted Therapy

With the resurgence in interest and research in psychedelics for mental health treatment, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy represents the only accessible psychedelic therapy in Ohio outside of clinical study participation. It’s natural to bring curiosity and questions to a modality that represents a shift from traditional talk therapy.

Who is a good fit for KAP

Research shows promise for ketamine in treating depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related disorders, and substance use disorders, among other mental health issues. Ketamine is increasingly used as a treatment for various chronic treatment-resistant mental and emotional conditions, often used after other treatment approaches have been unsuccessful.

While the scientific data is not completely clear, research suggests ketamine may help grow new neural connections once diminished by chronic stress, leaving many people feeling relief. For instance, some literature indicates a 70% response rate to ketamine of patients with treatment resistant depression, and a remission rate of 40-50%.

How does Ketamine feel?

The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subside, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.

Why is the psychotherapy part of KAP important?

The use of ketamine within a personal therapeutic relationship can help people better identify and work through difficult experiences and behavior patterns, providing new insights and healing that might not have been possible otherwise. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may allow a person to gain access to the causes of their struggles that were previously outside their awareness.

While there are providers that offer ketamine without therapeutic support, both at clinics and via telehealth, I believe that “set and setting” are crucial to productive healing experiences. The safe container of the therapeutic relationship supports transformative healing, especially in cases where relational dynamics are a part of presenting issues. I respect the importance and power of working with the experience of your whole self (heart, mind, and spirit) for deep, lasting healing.

What is your training for KAP?

We have completed training for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy and Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration through Fluence along with other various workshops and conferences on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. I continue to work to deepen my education and training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, have regular consultation support from other experienced providers, and engage in conferences, seminars, and ongoing training offered by Journey Clinical.

Do you prescribe medications?

No, offering prescriptions, administering or providing clients with any type of medication or psychedelic substances is outside of the scope of our practice.
